CORPS ÉTRANGERS | |||||
Stephanie Thiersch is leaving familiar ground behind and confronting contemporary dance with new circus. In “Corps Étrangers“, a German-French ensemble of dancers, acrobats and vertical ropes causes our modern-day worldview to sway: What are people, animals, plants, beings, objects? Where does the game end and the danger begin? In a production sated with powerful imagery in search of pre-civilisation physicality, soundscapes and surreal animal studies are interwoven with fantastical rituals and dizzying trance dance. The result is a bizarrely poetic cosmos that defies clear categorisation: “Thiersch’s choreography is visually powerful, brilliantly composed anarchy. (…) What remains when humans overcome their restrictive civilization? Power. Weightlessness. And freedom.” (Renée Wieder, Rheinische Post). Stephanie Thiersch, who is known for her crossover installation, dance and media productions, studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), among others. |
