Even though there were times when dancing to music was unthinkable in Europe and, much later, when modern dance seemed happy to forgo music altogether, the histories of dance and music are inextricably linked with one another. And nowadays when contemporary dancers team up with classically trained musicians who are keen to experiment, anything is possible – though that doesn’t mean that everything will be cleared up once and for all. In “for four”, choreographer Stephanie Thiersch insightfully encourages unexpected encounters and poetic collisions between three dancers and the internationally touring ensemble Asasello Quartet. With humorous sincerity and new music that oscillates between subtle and impulsive and often evades every cliché of danceability, “for four” challenges our sense of hearing as well as our grasp of time.
2015 marks a new version of “Nature Morte” presented in cooperation with a string quartet for the first time. The choreography spurs reflection on people, nature and animals whose implications sometimes clash yet are often similar. “Nature Morte” depicts how inanimate man can be in nature and how lively nature can be in man: “A touching, powerful scenario featuring the raw, lumbering inhabitants of an intermediate world at lawn’s end. As if they’d forgotten how to live as humans yet also failed as animals.” (Melanie Suchy, Rheinische Post)
