Tanz Festival 2011

Renegade
Renegade

Somewhere – a space that is open to possibility. Here, five break dancers and four contemporarily educated dancers meet. With sparse stage elements, they perpetually construct new worlds: Spaces emerge, allowing for games of presence and absence, telling tales of obstacles and longing. Choreographer Malou Airaudo keeps being inspired by the personalities of her dancers. The combination of different styles of dancing is a hallmark of Renegade, as is the examination of the realities of the younger generation, marked by the inability to stand still.
“Pure power meets elegance, two concepts about ‘world’ touch and permeate each other, become one before letting go. The title “Irgendwo“ (meaning “Somewhere“) leaves everything open, yet Malou Airaudo – former dancer with Pina Bausch – succeeds in creating a fascinating theatre evening.“ Die Welt

Renegade has been realizing independent dance theatre productions with international partners, dancers, choreographers and cultural institutions since 2003. Their productions utilize different art forms such as street art (like graffiti or VJing), of break dance as well as modern dance. This results in dance theatre plays setting international benchmarks in the field of hip hop theatre. Regarding direction and choreography, Renegade collaborates with young, talented artists such as Frenchman Lorca Renoux as well as working with independent, internationally acclaimed choreographers like Samir Akika or Malou Airaudo, depending on the project at hand. Renegade has long been at the forefront of the creative forces in German hip hop theatre and was awarded numerous prizes. Renegade has been artist in residence at the Schauspielhaus Bochum since 2010.
