DANIEL BURKHARDT
UNTERGRUND
Installation
A recurring principle in media artist Daniel Burkhardt’s work is a flood of perceptual stimuli which the human brain, through the processes of abstraction and selection, recognizes as known and rearranges in new groupings. Due to the sheer abundance of images, it is impossible for the viewer to take in everything and blind spots come into being. In ›Untergrund‹ Burkhardt, who has already worked several times in residency at PACT Zollverein and received awards including The Marl Video Art Award of the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl, focuses on this blindness. In contrast to his earlier work, however, the installation is no longer a projection surface for a plurality of images which challenge the viewers’ perception but rather it holds back the images and only allows those which blaze their way out of the depths to become visible. Not only Burkhardt’s concept but also the videos themselves question our perception: are the dream like images that enter into our consciousness from the swaying, floating subsurface all-encompassing or does their essence remain concealed from sight.

Installation
The Cologne based American artist Peter Miller focuses frequently in his photographic and film work on the phenomenon of magic, optical illusions and the constitutive elements of film such as lenses, light, audiences and projection.
The starting point for his new installation series ›Means to See‹, created especially for tanz nrw 11, are associative considerations like ›Can a twin have a double?‹, ‹What does one hand clapping sound like on the radio?‹ or, ›If art is created in the middle of a forest and nobody is there to see it – so what?‹

Lacking any transitions, unfiltered, punk follows house, Krautrock, sixties sounds, and experimental electronica can be heard after dance floor smashers well past their prime. To dance to, to smooch to, to fall down to. Sylvi Kretzschmar will be on stage as a musician and performer in Gudrun Lange’s CHEEEESE!.
