ALEXANDRA WAIERSTALL / Noema Dance Works

Alexandra Waierstall’s choreographies are marked by flowing movements and poetic pictures. Her thematic examinations of the origin and perception of frontiers is another distinguishing feature, as can also be seen in her new work “Mapping the Wind“: The force of the wind stands as a symbol for a space in which movement happens without a clear orientation or target course. The starting point is an assembly of wind maps charting the movement of air masses beyond mere territorial boundaries and a system of degrees of longitude and latitude which are not physically palpable, instead conveying orientation in space and time. In conjunction with video artist Marianna Christofides, she develops a staging in which the dancers seem to float on the air around them.
“Alexandra Waierstall establishes movement on a line that is half steeped in reality, with the other half lingering in imagination.“ Melanie Suchy, Brochure Tanzplattform Deutschland 2010

Alexandra Waierstall, born in England in 1979, grew up on Cyprus, and has been living mainly in Düsseldorf since 1998. She studied dance at the European Dance Development Center (EDDC) in Arnhem and Düsseldorf and completed her postgraduate studies in choreography at Dance Unlimited in Arnhem in 2006. As a dancer, she worked for different choreographers and guested on international stages with her own productions. In 2005, already having won numerous awards, she founded her own company Noema Dance Works.
