TCHEKPO DANCE COMPANY
THREE LEVELS
In his choreographies Tchekpo Dan Agbetou, choreographer, dancer and director of the Tchekpo Dance Company, merges modern dance and contemporary African dance forms in his own style. The combination of the traditional and the new, which he seemingly fuses without effort, often turns into the topic of his works. He consciously chooses dancers hailing from different African countries whilst questioning the European stereotype regarding the “African body“ with them and, therefore, perceives the differences brought about by different regions and differing ethnic groups. In his play “Three Levels“ he examines the difficult relationship between body and soul. Together with five dancers from the Ivory Coast, the Senegal, Nigeria and the Congo, he describes a life‘s arc from birth to death, broaching the issues of emergence and development, the perception of one‘s own body and strange bodies as well as their different interpretations within the cultures.
