Chikako Kaido

In this, her most current choreography, Chikako Kaido draws inspiration from the works of Japanese photographer Daidō Moriyama, whose pictures concentrate on the fringes of society. He directly and authentically captures street scenes, documenting the loneliness of existence. “Schattenlinien” starts from what’s seemingly hidden. A dance where the gaze is losing itself behind shapeless shadows, and the subject is not solely the action, but also the air and the magic of the moment.

Chikako Kaido, born in Tokio in 1979, first completed her classical ballet studies, dancing in numerous ballet productions by the Balllet Association Japan. In 2002, she began her dance education at the Folkwang Hochschule. In her choreographical works, she connects the influence of different cultures and dance traditions, molding them into an idiosyncratic work. Chikako Kaido’s choreography “There is an abyss“, done for the Folkwang Tanzstudio, already guested at tanz nrw 09.
