Artist VA Wölfl stages complete suprises. He studied painting with Oskar Kokoschka and photography at the Folkwangschule Essen, where two thirds of the dancers in his company originated. He can cope with being billed as a cho(i)reographer. To him, movement is the only means by which this opaque world may be explored. Far from an expressionist aesthetic, he pushes works bearing utterly personal traces. He gifts live to a serial world. It functions with a minimum of material and people which he uses again and again, from one piece to the next. Their perpetual recontextualisation in countless combinations creates the explosion. Effects that strain optical and aural nerves, because everything emerges from the light, light and still more light, music and silence and darkness. VA Wölfl is an artist who puts concepts to the test by implementing them. Yet he does not imagine himself as a committed creative. Heaven forbid! Even when the titles of his pieces function as annunciations, on the stage, complete surprise reigns.
