YOSHIE SHIBAHARA
EXUVIAE
A game with apparitions, with leftovers of the physical state. Exuviae are the skins that insects or reptiles shed. Those we have here are made of slightly creased ordinary aluminium foil feature a roughly humanoid shape and size and dangle from the ceiling, hung on threads. In the dark, they are reduced to spectres; but they seem more human than in the light. In small black coat and skirt, Yoshie Shibahara guards this weightless congregation of dead bodies or objects of art. With a flashlight, she goes on to inspect things, killing time while reading, checks her mobile, drinks tea. This mundane behaviour contrasts with the hanged companions between which also, in secrecy, a black figure with antennae-like fingers slithers around, a dancer. Spooky sounds palpitate and waft from all directions and put the room under tension. One starts seeing ghosts out of the sheer joy of floating thoughts. Excerpt from the honorific speech Kölner Tanztheaterpreis 2012, by Melanie Suchy
