Traditional German “Gardetanz” and contemporary dance – what happens when these two worlds collide? In “COBRA BLONDE”, Reut Shemesh takes a critical yet empathetic look at the representation of female dancers in traditional carnival celebrations and addresses the contradictions inherent in this form of entertainment. A symbol of the dance style as well as the inspiration for the title of this production is the blonde wig and the look it bestows – associated with everything from glamour to intimidation. “COBRA BLONDE” reveals the tense relationship between contemporary art’s notion of accentuating the individual and “Gardetanz”, which focuses on the communal strength of the group.
