Two worldviews distinguished by differing traditions, experiences and perceptions – Reut Shemesh renders the tension between fundamental beliefs visible. Stemming from a mixed orthodox and secular Jewish family, she utilises the body in an attempt to reflect the resulting balancing act of mutual tolerance and acceptance. Through re-enactment, photography and interviews, she examines the identity of Hasidic women, their gender roles and personal biographies.

Reut Shemesh received a degree in choreography from ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem as well as a master degree from Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. Her work ranges from contemporary dance and movement to experimental film and poetry. She was selected as the 2018 choreographer-in-residence at K3|Tanzplan Hamburg where she created “ATARA”.
